La Cienaga, a major north-south boulevard, is Spanish for the swamp. These lost wetlands are hinted at in some of L.A.’s street names. With the growth of Los Angeles and the surrounding communities over 95% of Southern California’s wetlands have been destroyed. The Los Angeles basin alone had 14,000 acres of wetlands.
